memcached, interview, and database scaling

by gregg on Feb 19, 2009

As I mentioned last week, I recently produced out a bunch of free Scaling Rails screencasts with the help of New Relic. We released seven of these last week, and today I’m happy to announce the release of two more.

memcached with Rails
Memcached
Talyor Weibley & Database Scaling
Taylor

What’s awesome about memcached not only object caching, but how it can help you avoid cache expiration. Cache expiration just sucks, so you really won’t want to miss this screencast. FYI, these screencasts look awesome on an iPhone.

Next week we’ll be releasing Client-side caching and Advanced HTTP Caching, and the week after the interview with Jesse Taylor and Jim Gochee with additional discussion on Rails Deployment and RPM Advanced Features. So don’t forget to subscribe to the screencast RSS feed or grab it on ITunes to avoid missing any of the episodes.

Lastly, the Rails Envy team is currently looking for work, so if your Rails project needs an experienced hand feel free to drop us a line. Not only do we provide development services, but we also do code reviews and training. Drop us a line we’d love to chat with you.

I’ve not been able to get them to play, in the browser the quicktime icon just greys out after a while and has a ? over it. If I download the mp4’s I get the following error “An invalid sample description was found in the movie.” (running QT 7.5.5 on OS X) - all the previous videos worked fine.

That’s quite odd Dave. Are you still having issues? Anyone else having issues?

Can you download the full video and watch it in itunes?

Dave Spurr – February 19, 2009 @ 05:53 PM

Is it just me then? I tried again and no luck, then I tried subscribing to the feed in iTunes and the files download (get to 100%) but then don’t show up in iTunes and they sit in the downloads section as (for ep 8) 52.0MB - Done. I tried episode 7 in iTunes too and that one works fine over there as well…

Maybe I should run that QT upgrade that’s in software update, I just can’t be bothered with a restart right now—I know, I know a restart is not a big deal really. Just seems odd that all the other episodes have been working fine (and they’ve been great so far by the way).

They all seem to work fine for me on Linux.

I’m seeing the same problem with quicktime 7.5.5 on vista, but updating to quicktime to 7.6 fixed it for me, i had to manually update quicktime by loading up the quicktime player and looking for the update.

Same issues. Tried viewing in Safari, downloading through iTunes and Safari with no luck. The only time I got an error was a download to the desktop. I think it said something about an invalid description. Upgrading Quicktime (and restarting) seems to have fixed it.

Just upgraded to 7.6 on OS X and the videos now play if I download them or from the subscription in iTunes - but I still don’t get any playback in the browser.

Hey guys, sorry for the issues.

I’ve uploaded new versions of the videos which shouldn’t cause these problems. Not sure ITunes has the new versions yet, but you can download them right off the New Relic website:
