Episode 70. I was going to try and copy Gregg from last week but my dog can't talk yet to do the introduction. Darn obedience classes. Obie Fernandez from Hashrocket co-hosts this week and we have a blast. I hope you all enjoy the show and am sorry for the delay. But it's a good one, I promise!

3 Month Conference Schedule

by gregg on Mar 08, 2009

Over the next few months Jason and I are going to be speaking at a few events, and if you are attending or live in the area we’d love to meet you.

SXSW > March 13-17

Location: Austin, TX

Say Hello at SXSW

First up is SXSW where I’ll be there (sans Jason) giving a talk on How not to FAIL at Web Services where I’ll be taking a look at a few ugly Web Services from big name companies like Flickr and Amazon, and show you how they failed. I’ll be speaking the RESTful gospel, so if you fully get REST (as many Rails developers do), feel free to come to watch the incredible amount of FAIL I’ll be doling out.

Emerging Technologies for the Enterprise > March 26-27

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Secondly Jason and I will be doing a talk on Innovation in Ruby at ETE. Don’t worry, this will be entirely new content if you’ve already seen us do an innovation talk. Doing the Rails Envy podcast we see a great deal of useful code & libraries coming out of the Ruby & Rails community, and in this talk we’ll take a closer look at 20 new innovations.

JAX 09 > April 20-24

Location: Mainz, Germany

Next up I’ll be taking a trip back to Germany to speak at JAX 09, one of Germany’s biggest Tech events. There I’ll be helping out with the Ruby on Rails day hosted by Michael Johann. I’ll be talking on Innovation in Rails and Rails 3.

Railsconf 2009 > May 4-8

Location: Las Vegas, NV

Jason and I will both be at Railsconf this year, and we’re really looking forward to it. There our talk is Rails: A Year of Innovation. Again, don’t worry if you’ve seen us talk about Rails Innovation before, this will be all new content. We’ll walk through 20 new tools you might want to be using on your current and future projects.

And that’s about it

That’s all we have scheduled for the next 3 months. Few conference related things you might want to know about:

  • If your company is in one of these Cities (or nearby) and you’d like to do an in person code review, training, or pair programming session while we’re in the area, feel free to contact us.
  • If your company wants to do some audio or video screencasting/podcasting and you’d like a hand, we can certainly assist with that as well.
  • We’re always looking for sponsors. Not just for our podcast, but also for the numerous conference videos I’ve produced. These conference videos have averaged around 40,000 views each, and provide an interesting opportunity to advertise to a specific demographic (whoever is interested in a conference). Contact Us if you want to hear more details.
P.S. If you think I travel a lot, check out Neal Ford’s conference schedule. He’s a great speaker, but that man must hate airports!

Interviews, Deployment, and Advanced RPM

by gregg on Mar 05, 2009

The next two videos of the Scaling Rails screencasts are now out. In these episodes you’ll see two interviews, learn about Rails deployment, and browse through the advanced features of New Relic RPM.

Jesse Newland & Deployment
Jim Gochee & Advanced RPM

These are the last two videos I produced for the series, and I know I missed a few topics. So if you’d like to see more, please take a moment and fill out this feedback form.

Thanks for watching!

Rails Magazine and Ruby VMs

by Jason on Mar 03, 2009

Just some quick shameless self promotion:

I did a talk at QCon a while back on the different Ruby Virtual Machines. You can check out the presentation the InfoQ web site: Ruby VMs: A Comparison. If you don't want to watch the whole thing and hear all my "umms" here's a spoiler: JRuby wins. Fatality.

Rails Magazine issue 1The first issue of Rails Magazine is out also! There's an article in there from yours truly on receiving email with Rails. There's also a bunch of other top notch content. Go check it out. They're also looking for content for the next issue so if you have something you'd like to contribute definitely drop them a line.
